# Configuring a domain for email forwarding

## Learn how to configure email forwarding with B12.

Before you can set up email forwarding in B12, your domain must be connected and verified. Follow the steps below to complete your setup and create a custom forwarding address.

### Automatically configuring your domain

1\. In the left sidebar menu, go to `Domains`.

2\. Add a new domain by clicking `Add domain` or choose the existing domain you'd like to set up forwarding for.

3\. Check off the option to `Enable email forwarding for this domain`, then click `Sync domain`.

**Tip:** Choose this option only if you don’t already have an email provider for your domain. If you already have one, follow these instructions to [set up email sending](https://support.b12.io/en/how-to-configure-a-domain-for-email-sending-only?hsLang=en) only.

4\. Log in to your domain provider to automatically update your DNS settings.

If your provider isn’t listed or the automatic setup doesn’t work, follow the [manual connection steps](https://support.b12.io/en/manually-connecting-your-domain-to-b12?hsLang=en).

Once your settings are updated, domain verification usually completes within 24–48 hours.

5\. After verification, you can [create custom email forwarding addresses](https://support.b12.io/en/how-to-set-up-custom-email-addresses-for-email-forwarding?hsLang=en) for this domain.

### Manually configuring your domain

If automatic setup isn’t available, follow these steps to connect your domain manually.

Scroll down to the **Email domain setup** instructions to view the unique DNS records you'll need to add to your domain settings.

Next, you'll need to follow these steps to get your custom email address up and running:

 

1\. Log in to your domain host.

2\. Find the DNS settings for the domain you would like to use.

3\. Add the 2 MX records and 2 TXT records from your setup instructions to your DNS settings:

Type: `MX`

Host/Name: *@*

Value: `mxa.mailgun.org`

Priority: 10

 

Type: `MX`

Host/Name: *@*

Value: `mxb.mailgun.org`

Priority: 10

 

Type: `TXT`

Host/Name: *(usually @)*

Value: `v=spf1 include:mailgun.org ~all`

Type: `TXT`

Host: *In most cases, use only the text in the "Name" field before the second period.*

Value: *Paste the unique value for your account.*

**Important:** If you already have a TXT record with v=spf1, you will need to edit your existing record using the following instructions.

Changes to DNS settings may take up to **48 hours** to take effect. Once verified, your **Email domain setup** card will display Configured next to each record. You can then create custom email forwarding addresses for your domain.
