# Managing users and sign-in settings

## See who has an account on your website, add or remove people, and choose how visitors sign in.

If your website has a members area, a client portal or any page people log in to, everyone with an account is listed in Backends under Users. This article shows you how to view those accounts, add and remove people yourself, and set the rules for how visitors sign up and sign in.

**Note:** Users appears as soon as Backends is turned on. People show up there once they sign up on your site, or once you add them yourself. If your site doesn't have sign-up and log-in pages yet, see [Adding backend functionality](https://support.b12.io/en/v3/adding-backend-functionality?hsLang=en), or ask the AI Agent to build them for you.

### Setting up a members area

You don't need to set up sign-in yourself. You describe what you want in the AI Agent chat, and the AI Agent turns on Backends and builds the pages for you.

1. Open the AI Agent chat and send a request like this one:

   ```
   Add a members area to my site. I want visitors to be able to sign up and log in, and a members-only page called [page name] that they can only see once they're logged in.
   ```
2. When the AI Agent asks to turn on Backends, a card appears in the chat. Click `Enable`.
3. Wait while the AI Agent finishes the task list. It sets up sign-in, builds your sign-up, log-in and members pages, and adds links to your navigation.
4. Click `Publish` so the pages appear on your live website.

To check it works, open your members page in preview. You should land on the log-in page instead, which means the page is closed to anyone who hasn't signed in. Building a members area uses [AI credits](https://support.b12.io/en/v3/ai-message-credits?hsLang=en).

### Viewing your users

The Users page lists everyone who has an account on your website, with a count at the top. These are your site's visitors and members. They're separate from your B12 team members, who are managed under `Team`.

To open it:

1. Click `Menu` at the top of the B12 Editor.
2. Select `Backends`.
3. Select `Users`.

![Users page in Backends listing accounts with Email, Sign-in, Created, Last sign-in and Status columns](https://support.b12.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-12-55-2285-PM.png?width=670&height=281&name=image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-12-55-2285-PM.png)

Each row shows one person's account:

- **Email:** the address they sign in with.
- **Sign-in:** Sign-in: how they sign in, for example, email or Google.
- **Created:** when the account was made. The list is sorted by this column, newest first.
- **Last sign-in:** the last time they logged in. "Never" means they haven't signed in yet.
- **Status:** whether they can sign in right now (see below).

An account can have one of four statuses:

| Status | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| **Active** | The person can sign in. |
| **Unconfirmed** | The person was invited, or signed up, but hasn’t confirmed their email address yet. |
| **Deactivated** | You’ve locked the account. The person can’t sign in until you reactivate it. |
| **Anonymous** | The person is using your site as a guest, without an account. Their email shows as “Anonymous”. You’ll only see this if your site has guest access. |

### Adding a user

Most people create their own account on your sign-up page. You can also add someone yourself, which is handy for a private area where only invited people should get in. There are two ways to do it: set a password for them, or email them an invitation.

To add a user:

1. On the Users page, click `Add user`.
2. Type the person's email address.
3. Choose how they'll get access:
     - **To set a password yourself,** type it in the **Password** field and click `Add user`.
     - **To email an invitation,** tick `Email an invitation instead of setting a password`, then click `Send invitation`.

![Add user panel with Email field, invitation checkbox and Password field](https://support.b12.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-13-26-0732-PM.png?width=351&height=252&name=image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-13-26-0732-PM.png)

If you set a password, the account is Active straight away. Nothing is emailed to the person, so you'll need to give them the password yourself.

If you send an invitation, the account shows as Unconfirmed until they accept it. The email comes from your business name and your site's sender email address. When they click **Accept the invite**, their status changes to **Active**, and they land on the home page of your live website. They don't set a password at this step.

**Tip:** Before you invite people, ask the AI Agent to add a page where invited members can set their password, then publish your site. Invite links open your live website, so the page needs to be published, not just built. Then send a test invite to your own email to check that it works.

### Editing a user

You can change a user's details, reset their password, or see their account history.

1. On the Users page, point at the person's row, then click the pencil icon ![visual-edit](https://support.b12.io/hubfs/B12%20UI%20Icons/Editing/visual-edit.svg) on the right, or click anywhere on the row. A panel opens on the left.
2. Make the changes you need:
     - **Change their email address** in the **Email** field.
     - **Set a new password** in the **New password** field. Leave it blank to keep their current one.
     - **Email them a reset link** by clicking `Send password reset instead`, then `Send`. The email goes out as soon as you click Send, so you don't need to click Save. Like an invitation, the link opens the home page of your live website, so make sure your site has a published page for setting a new password.
     - **Mark their email as confirmed** by ticking `Email confirmed`, if they can't find the confirmation email.
3. Click `Save` to apply changes to the email, password, Email confirmed, or Profile data.

The panel also shows the person's User ID, when they signed up, when they last signed in, how they sign in, and, for invited people, when they were invited.

The **Profile data** box holds extra details your site stores about the person, written in a format your site's code reads. It's best left as it is. If you need to change what your site stores about members, ask the AI Agent instead.

### Deactivating or deleting a user

When you want to stop someone from signing in, you have two options. Deactivating locks the account but keeps it, so you can let them back in later. Deleting removes the account for good.

**To deactivate a user:**

1. On the Users page, point at the person's row, then click the pencil icon ![visual-edit](https://support.b12.io/hubfs/B12%20UI%20Icons/Editing/visual-edit.svg) on the right.
2. In the panel, click `Deactivate` next to their status.
3. Click `Deactivate` again to confirm.

Their status changes to Deactivated as soon as you confirm, so you don't need to click Save. Their account and data stay in place. They can't sign in while they're deactivated. In the panel, you'll see a "Deactivated until" date far in the future. That just means the account stays locked until you reactivate it. To let them back in, open the panel again, click `Reactivate`, and confirm.

**To delete a user:**

1. On the Users page, point at the person's row, then click the red delete icon on the right.
2. Click `Delete` to confirm.

After that, they can't sign in with that account.

**Caution:** Deleting a user permanently removes their account and sign-in history, and it can't be undone. Depending on how your site was built, it may also delete data linked to that person, such as their profile. If there's a chance they'll come back, deactivate them instead.

### Choosing how people sign in

Sign-in settings control who can create an account on your site and what they need to sign in.

1. On the Users page, click `Sign-in settings` at the top right. A panel opens on the left.
2. Turn on or off the settings you want to change. Each one is explained below.
3. Click `Save`.

![Sign-in settings panel with toggles for signups, email confirmation, password sign-in, anonymous sign-in and leaked passwords](https://support.b12.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-25-37-3608-PM.png?width=350&height=502&name=image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-25-37-3608-PM.png)

#### Turning off new signups

`Allow new signups` is on by default, so anyone can create an account from your sign-up page. Turn it off to stop new people joining. Anyone who tries to sign up won't be able to. People who already have an account can still sign in.

**Tip:** For a private area that only invited people can use, turn off `Allow new signups` and add each person yourself from the Users page. Your sign-up page still shows, so ask the AI Agent to remove the Sign up link too.

#### Changing the sign-in rules

The other settings decide what a person needs before they can sign in:

| Setting | What it does | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Require email confirmation** | New users must click a link in their email before they can sign in. Turn it off and they’re signed in as soon as they sign up. | On |
| **Allow email and password sign-in** | Lets people sign in with an email address and password. If you turn it off, people who use a password can’t sign in, and password reset emails won’t send. | On |
| **Allow anonymous sign-in** | Lets people use your site as a guest before they create an account. The setting alone isn’t enough: ask the AI Agent to add guest access to your site first. | Off |
| **Block leaked passwords** | Turns away passwords that have shown up in a known data breach. | Off |
| **Minimum password length** | The fewest characters a password can have. You can raise it for stronger passwords, but you can’t set it below 6. | 6 |

#### Turning on Google sign-in

You can let people sign in with their Google account instead of a password. This takes a few steps in Google, but you only need to do it once.

1. In the [Google Cloud console](https://console.cloud.google.com/), create a project for your website.
2. Open Google Auth Platform and click **Get started**. Add your app name and support email address, and choose **External** as the audience so anyone with a Google account can sign in.
3. Go to **Audience** and click **Publish app**, then confirm. If you skip this, the app stays in Testing, and only the test users you list can sign in.
4. Go to **Clients \>** **Create client,** and choose **Web application**.
5. Under **Authorized redirect URIs**, add your redirect URI, then click `Create`. To get it, ask the AI Agent: "What should I paste into Authorized redirect URIs for Google sign-in?" It gives you an address ending in /auth/v1/callback.
6. Copy the client ID and client secret that Google shows you.
7. Back in B12, open `Sign-in settings` and turn on `Allow Google sign-in`.
8. Paste them into **Google client ID** and **Google client secret**, then click `Save`.

![Sign-in settings panel with Allow Google sign-in turned on and Google client ID and Google client secret fields](https://support.b12.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-36-44-3153-PM.png?width=345&height=190&name=image-png-Oct-05-2026-08-36-44-3153-PM.png)

**Note:** Your sign-in page also needs a "Sign in with Google" button. If it doesn't have one, ask the AI Agent to add it.

### FAQ

→How do I make my members area invite-only?

⇒Open Sign-in settings, turn off **Allow new signups**, and click `Save`. Then add each person yourself from the Users page, either by setting a password or by sending an invitation.

→Do I need to publish after changing users or sign-in settings?

⇒No. Changes here take effect as soon as you save them. Publishing is only for changes to your pages.

→Can I get a deleted user back?

⇒No. Deleting a user can't be undone. The person can sign up again as a new account if signups are allowed, or you can add them again yourself.

→Why can't one of my members sign in?

⇒Check their status on the Users page. If it says **Deactivated**, open their edit panel and click `Reactivate`. If it says **Unconfirmed**, they haven't confirmed their email yet, so you can tick **Email confirmed** in their edit panel and save. If they've forgotten their password, set a new one for them or send a password reset.

→Why didn't my member get the invitation email?

⇒Invitation and password reset emails come from your business name and your site's sender email address. Ask them to check their spam folder. Your site can send up to 100 sign-in emails an hour in total, including invitations, password resets and sign-up confirmations. If you're inviting a big group, send the invites in smaller batches.

→How do I make myself an admin of my members area?

⇒Ask the AI Agent to add you as an admin. Admin access is part of how your site was built, so you can't change it from the Users page.
