A 404 error means a webpage can't be found. This usually happens when a page has been moved, deleted, renamed, or hidden. Visitors who land on a broken URL will see this error instead of your page.
This article covers the most common causes of 404 errors on your B12 website and the steps to resolve each one.
404 errors inside the editor
If you see a 404 error while working inside the B12 editor, your website may have been unpublished. When a site is unpublished, it's removed from all connected domains and is no longer publicly accessible, including in the editor preview.
To restore access, republish your site:
- In the left sidebar, go to
.Domains
- Click
Republish site. - Confirm your selection.
Once republished, the 404 error is cleared, and your site is live again.
Note: For more details on what happens when you unpublish and how to avoid accidental 404 errors, see Unpublishing your website.
If republishing doesn't resolve the issue, contact the B12 Support team.
Common causes
404 errors on B12 websites are typically caused by one of the following:
- A page is hidden, and you selected
PrevieworPublish - A page was renamed, which changed its URL
- A page was deleted
- A URL was typed incorrectly or shared with a typo
- Your website was unpublished
Fixing a typo in a URL
If a URL was shared or entered with a typo, no changes to your site are needed. Check the URL in your browser's address bar and correct any spelling errors.
Redirecting a changed or deleted URL
If a page URL has changed or no longer exists, you can redirect the old URL to a new page.
If a page URL has changed or no longer exists, you can redirect the old URL to a new page. This sends visitors to the right place instead of showing a 404 error.
For step-by-step instructions, see Adding URL redirects.
Tip: Redirects are useful when a page has been renamed or removed, and you want to preserve links shared externally, such as in emails or social media posts.
Correcting a page URL
If a page was renamed and its URL changed as a result, you can restore the original URL or update it to the correct one.
To rename a page back to its original name:
Rename the [current page name] page back to [original name] and restore its original URL.
To update the URL to a specific value:
Update the URL for the [page name] page to [correct URL].
After confirming the change, click Publish.
Restoring a deleted page
If a page was deleted, you can restore an earlier version of your website using the AI Agent's restore points.
For step-by-step instructions, see Restoring a previous version.
Caution: Restoring a previous version will undo all changes made after that point. If you've made other updates since the page was deleted, those changes will be lost.
If you've made other changes since then that you want to keep, you can rebuild the page using the AI Agent:
Recreate the [page name] page on my website. Match the style and layout of my existing pages. Add it to my navigation menu.
