If your domain name isn’t connecting to your B12 website, don’t worry—this is a common issue and can be resolved.
Domains rely on DNS records and verification steps, and sometimes delays or misconfigurations can prevent them from attaching right away.
This guide explains the most common reasons for domain connection issues and the steps you can take to fix them.
Common reasons your domain may not be connected
DNS Propagation Delay
After updating your domain settings, DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully propagate. This means that it may take some time before your domain is connected to your website.
Verify your settings, wait, and check back in 24-48 hours.
Verification Requirements
If you purchased a new domain through B12, ensure that you have completed any required verification emails from IONOS. Failing to verify your contact information with your domain provider can prevent it from being connected.
Look for any pending verification emails from IONOS and complete the verification process if necessary.
Incorrect DNS Settings
For existing domains, it is essential to check that you have added the correct CNAME and A records in your domain provider's DNS settings. Incorrect records can lead to connection issues.
Log in to your domain provider's account and ensure that the CNAME and A records are correctly configured by following these steps.
Browser Cache
Sometimes, your browser may cache old information. Refreshing your browser can help you see the most current status of your domain connection.
Try loading your website in an incognito or private browsing window.
Clear your browser cache or refresh the page to see if the connection status has changed.
Publishing & Listing your Domain in B12
Check the B12 Domains section in your account and make sure your domain is listed and see if it is showing as connected. This section provides the latest information regarding your domain status.
If you have not previously published your website, your domain will show an error message. If your domain is listed as connected, click Publish in the top right corner of your B12 Editor to go live.
Domain has expired
If your domain has expired, it will no longer point to your B12 website until it’s renewed. Domains are typically registered on a yearly basis, and if the renewal date passes without payment, the domain may enter a grace period or become inactive.
To fix this issue, log in to your domain registrar account and check your domain’s renewal status. If it shows as expired, renew it as soon as possible to restore functionality. Once renewed, it can take up to 48 hours for the domain to fully reconnect after propagation.
If your domain has been expired for an extended period, it may have been released back to the public registry. In this case, you’ll need to re-purchase the domain (if it’s still available) or choose a new one.
Automatic domain connection fails
If your automatic domain connection doesn’t work, don’t worry—this usually happens when B12 can’t locate your domain registrar or connect through an unsupported login method.
If you encounter this issue, use the manual connection option instead. Manual setup allows you to enter your DNS records directly into your registrar’s settings, ensuring full control and reliability.
